Generally, the felt laying techniques employed should follow BS 8217:1994. Black Jack Roof Felt Adhesive is best brushed or mop applied and left ‘open’ for 15 to 30 minutes before placing the roofing felt into the wet adhesive film. Place it carefully, rubbing or rolling each section to make maximum contact with the adhesive and exclude air. The felt should be weighted down until it has fully adhered. Where possible, unroll the felt into the adhesive and roll it home with a lighter roller (around 25kg).
Lap Cement, Timber Roof Structures and Concrete and Lightweight Concrete Screeds
- For lap cement, laps at the edges should be at least 75mm wide and laps at roll ends 150mm. Treat laps and final edges liberally on their underside with Black Jack Roof Felt Adhesive and ensure they are well compacted. On timber roof structures, nail down the first felt layer to meet BS 8217:1994. Second and third layers may be bonded using Black Jack Roof Felt Adhesive. For concrete and lightweight concrete screeds, prime porous surfaces to successfully adhere Black Jack Roof Felt Adhesive. Use Black Jack Bitumen and Flashing Primer, making sure it is fully dried before the first layer of felt.
As a Cold Gritting Solution
- Black Jack Roof Felt Adhesive can be used as a gritting solution for a 10° sloped roofs. Ensure clean and dirt, dust and debris-free surfaces that are dry, although the felt adhesive can be applied to damp surfaces (not wet or waterlogged). Spread evenly, direct from the container in areas of 20m2 at a time. Do not allow the film to puddle or get too thin. Chippings should be applied immediately into the wet film, but be careful not to over-chip. Make the Chipping’s cover the film from shoulder to shoulder. Allow 72 hours before brushings excess chippings from the completed surface. Black film should not be left exposed.
After Care and Tools
- After 24 hours, check all bonding for full adhesion. Make sure to check all laps and if in doubt, press home or roll any felt that lacks adhesion. Tools can be cleaned with paraffin or white spirit. Wipe spills before the felt adhesive is set.
Please note:
- Do not use in places where subsequent solvent contact is likely. Avoid inhalation of vapours in tight spaces. Nail down the first felt layer on timber roof structures to meet BS 8217:1994.
- Black Jack Roof Felt Adhesive contains a flammable solvent. Normal fire precautions must be taken during storage and use. Store in the original container in cool dry conditions and keep clear of sources of ignition.
